Once again please note that I am assumeing you have read up to Blood of the Fold if you are reading this, therefore please
beware of spoilers.
Temple of the Winds was another excellent book in this series. I find it a step up from Blood
of the Fold, but still not up to scratch with the rest of the series. Temple of the Winds finds Richard still trying to get
the new world to join together, whilst trying to combat the fierce attacks of the imperial order coming from the old world.
In this novel, we find Richard caught in a "bound fork prophesy" the effect of one of which is that either
fork the subject choses he is destroyed. This prophesy was invoked by Jagang, the leader of the imperial order. He believes
that if he can destroy Richard in this way, he can make the war a sure thing, as Richard is the only one with hope of leading
the New World to victory. The prophesy involves a plague which Janang has released on the inhabitants of the new world.
This
book helps to develop Jagang as a character because we begin to see the full extent of his power as a dream walker. There
is an excellant beginning sequence that displays this powerfully. We also see Richard grow to new heights in this book as
he and Kahlan have a lover's spat that might have cost them the war. A new character for this book and an interesting one
indeed, Defran, another bastard son of Darken Rahl. His character is interesting to observe throughout the story, and foreshadows
of Oba, a character in 'The Pillars of Creation.'
The Temple of the Winds leads us to understand alot more about the war that continues, and that war which occured in
the past. The Journal comes into play again. Temple of the Winds also brings up an interesting philosophical point
to be questioned near the end.
Another solid book in this series, and a step forward from Blood of the Fold. -Trekie
