At last we come to the last chapter in this terrific trilogy of movies (the book is all one though.) We start with another
prologue like scene such as Gandalf and the Balrog in The Two Towers, and the history of the Ring in The Fellowship of the
Ring. This time; however, we see the tale of Sméagol and his friend Déagol and the inheritence of the Ring. This spectacular
start shows how the Ring fell into the hands of Gollum (Sméagol) and also how he transformed from the Hobbit-like being into
the infested minded being that he now is. After we see the transformation we cut to Frodo and Sam waking under the cover of some
ancient ruins. After a small discussion between Frodo and Sam, Gollum arrives and they prepare to set off once again to the
secret entrance into Mordor near Minas Morgul. We now come to Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf, and the King's company from
Rohan coming to the now flooded Isenguard. The group comes to the walls where Meriadoc and Peregrin now sit atop victory with
the Ents. With half the Fellowship reunited, and Saruman's power destroyed, the Ents keep Orthanc (the tower) guarded so that
the turned-evil wizard will never cause havoc again. The King's company + 1/2 of the Fellowship returns to Edoras for a ceremony
honouring the dead soldiers of Rohan. During the break of dawn, Peregrin sneaks a look at the newly-acquired Palantir from
Isenguard, and luckily reveals nothing to Sauron. However, Sauron does reveal something accidentally to Peregrin, and that
is that he will attack the Gondorian capital of Minas Tirith. After informing Gandalf of this, the two ride for Gondor, while
the rest of the Felloship prepares for battle. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli ride off into the Paths of the Dead to summon the
armies of the dead to the aid of Gondor, but first the three must convince the King of the Dead that Aragorn is Isildur's
Heir. Meanwhile, Meriadoc, Théoden, Eomer, and Eowyn continue to ride to Minas Tirith to aid Gondor, and Gandalf and Peregrin
prepare for the battle ahead. During all this Frodo, Sam and Gollum continue to Mordor and arrive at Minas Morgul, about to
climb the steps to the secret tunnel to Cirith Ungol (a tower on the borders of Mordor.) Little do Frodo and Sam know that
what awaits them at the top of the steps might threaten their quest.
I thought this was the best of the three films, and all things were just about done perfectly. The special effects, the
(mostly) accurate re-telling of the book, and the drama. There were a few things which could be frustrating to the fans of
the books (like the other two movies.) Due to my attention to not revealing anything, I can't say anything because all these
small problems are tied in with the plot too much. I must say though, that the Battle of the Peleannor Fields was terrific
and the sheer size of it dwarfed (no pun intended) the Battle of Helm's Deep. I highly recommend this movie to all fantasy
fans and I think this was the best movie ever (well, the extended DVD will definitely be spectacular, plus I thought The Fellowship
of the Ring extended DVD was slightly better.)
